Glossary

Common terms used in vinyl collecting and throughout DeepGrooves.

Record Formats

Term	Definition
LP	Long Play. 12" record at 33⅓ RPM. Standard album format.
EP	Extended Play. Typically 4-6 tracks, often 10" or 12".
Single	7" record at 45 RPM with 1-2 tracks per side.
12" Single	12" record at 45 RPM, often with extended mixes.
10"	Ten-inch record, common for EPs and early LPs.
78	Shellac record at 78 RPM. Pre-vinyl format.
Picture Disc	Record with image printed on playing surface.
Colored Vinyl	Non-black vinyl in various colors.
Box Set	Multiple records sold as a set in special packaging.

Pressing Terms

Term	Definition
Pressing	A specific manufacturing run of a record.
First Pressing	Original release pressing. Often most valuable.
Reissue	Later pressing of a previously released album.
Remaster	New pressing from remastered audio source.
Bootleg	Unauthorized pressing, often of live recordings.
Promo	Promotional copy, often with different labels/stamps.
White Label	Promo or test pressing with plain white label.
Test Pressing	Pre-production copies for approval. Limited quantities.
DMM	Direct Metal Mastering. Cutting technique for clarity.
Half-Speed Mastered	Cut at half speed for improved quality.

Catalog and Labels

Term	Definition
Catalog Number	Label's identifier for a release (e.g., "ABC-123").
Matrix Number	Codes etched in dead wax identifying pressing.
Dead Wax	Smooth area between grooves and label.
Label	Record company that released the album.
Variant	Different version (label color, insert, etc.).

Condition Terms

Term	Definition
Hairlines	Very fine surface scratches, usually inaudible.
Scuffs	Surface marks from handling, often inaudible.
Ring Wear	Circular imprint on sleeve from record.
Seam Split	Sleeve edge separating at glue point.
Warp	Record not flat, may affect playback.
Dish Warp	Center raised or lowered like a dish.
Hot Stamper	Exceptionally well-pressed copy with superior sound.

Source And Marketplace Terms

Term	Definition
DeepGrooves Catalog	The primary album, release, and pressing catalog used by DeepGrooves. It contains millions of titles and pressings and is refreshed monthly.
External Source	A connected or reference source that may help with imports, marketplace context, artwork, or missing release details. External sources supplement the DeepGrooves catalog; they do not replace your DeepGrooves collection.
Release	A specific version of an album, usually tied to a label, country, year, format, catalog number, barcode, or pressing detail. A release is more specific than a general album title.
Master Release / Work	A parent grouping that can contain many releases or pressings of the same album/work.
Have / Want	Community ownership or demand signal where available. It can be useful context, but it is not proof of value or availability.
Marketplace	A buying/selling surface or listing source for records. Marketplace signals can help with values and alerts, but listings can change quickly.
Median Price	Middle price point of recent sales.

DeepGrooves Terms

Term	Definition
Album / Work	The musical title, such as an album name. One album/work can have many releases or pressings.
Release / Pressing	The specific version of an album, such as a country, label, catalog number, year, format, barcode, or source release ID.
Copy / Item	The individual record you own or track. Two physical copies of the same release count as two copies/items.
Collection	Records you own. Collection sidebar counts use copy/item counts.
Wishlist	Records you want but do not own yet. Wishlist counts use wants.
Favorites	Owned copies you marked for quick access.
Grouped View	A browsing view that may combine multiple owned copies into one album/release row. Grouped row counts can be lower than copy counts.
Folder	Custom grouping you create.
Vault	Physical storage location tracking.
Slot	Specific position in a storage unit.

Why Counts Can Differ

DeepGrooves avoids showing bare totals when the meaning is unclear. The sidebar labels totals as copies, wants, or favorites. The main Collection, Wishlist, and Favorites headers do not show a competing total in the full unfiltered view. When you search, filter, pick a genre, open a folder, or use another scoped view, the header can show the current result count.

This matters because one album/work can have multiple releases, and one release can have multiple owned copies. For example, two owned copies of the same pressing are two copies but may appear as one grouped album/release row.
