Tags

Tags are flexible personal labels you add to records in your collection. They are useful when a record can belong to more than one idea.

Use tags for:

moods, such as Chill, Road Trip, or Late Night,
projects, such as To Clean, Sell, Upgrade, or Listen Soon,
listening themes, such as Sunday Morning or Party,
personal notes that should also be searchable or filterable,
and custom groupings that do not fit one fixed field.

Tags are private collection organization. They do not change Discogs data, album identity, pressing identity, condition, value, or physical storage location.

Tags vs Folders vs Smart Collections

Tags, folders, and Smart Collections are related, but they solve different problems.

Use tags when one record can belong to several ideas. Use folders when you want a deliberate manual group. Use Smart Collections when you want DeepGrooves to keep a view updated automatically.

Add a Tag to One Album

Open the album detail page for the record.
Find the tags area.
Choose Find or create tag.
Search for an existing tag, or type a new tag name.
Select the tag.
Save or confirm the change if the screen asks you to.

The album stays in your Collection. Adding a tag only changes your personal organization for that owned copy.

Create a New Tag

You can usually create a tag from the same tag picker used to assign tags.

Open an album detail page.
Open the tag picker.
Type the tag name you want.
Choose the create/add option when it appears.
Save or confirm the tag assignment.

Good tag names are short and easy to scan:

Chill
Sell
To Clean
Upgrade
Road Trip
Late Night
Listen Soon

Avoid creating several nearly identical tags, such as Clean, Cleaning, and Needs Cleaning, unless they mean different things to you.

Remove a Tag From an Album

Removing a tag from an album does not delete the album and does not delete the tag everywhere.

Open the album detail page.
Find the tag you want to remove.
Use the remove action on that tag.
Save or confirm if needed.

The record remains in your Collection and keeps any other tags, folders, notes, ratings, condition grades, and storage location.

Find Tagged Albums

Use Collection search, filters, or Smart Collections to find records by tag where supported.

Common workflows include:

showing all records tagged To Clean,
reviewing everything tagged Sell,
finding mood tags like Chill,
building a listening pile from Listen Soon,
or combining tags with genre, format, condition, rating, value, and year.

Use Tags in Smart Collections

Smart Collections can use tags as criteria when you want a saved view that stays current.

Examples:

Goal	Possible criteria
Chill records to play	Tag is `Chill` and collection status is owned
Sell pile	Tag is `Sell` and value is above your review threshold
Cleanup list	Tag is `To Clean` or condition is missing
Upgrade candidates	Tag is `Upgrade` or Upgrade Watch is active

If you manually choose exactly which records belong together, use a folder. If the list should update based on tag rules, use a Smart Collection.

Tips

Keep tags consistent

Pick one naming style and reuse it. For example, choose either To Clean or Needs Cleaning, then stick with it.

Use tags for personal meaning

Genres, formats, and years already have their own fields. Tags work best for ideas only you know, such as Dad's Records, College, Rainy Day, or Store Pull.

Review tags after large imports

After importing many records, tags can help you create cleanup batches without moving records into permanent folders.

Troubleshooting

I cannot find a tag I created

Check spelling, clear filters, and make sure you are looking in the same collection scope. A tag may not appear in a filtered view if no visible records currently use it.

A tag-based Smart Collection is empty

Open one of the records you expected to appear and confirm the tag is actually assigned. Also check whether the Smart Collection has other criteria, such as format, genre, condition, or Wishlist state.

I removed a tag. Did it delete my record?

No. Removing a tag only removes that label from the record. It does not delete the record from your Collection.
